Challenges in EL Papers

Dear Parents,

Are you worried about your child’s EL grade? Is your child struggling in any of the following areas – editing, summary writing and comprehension skills? Does your child know the much-needed skills and strategies to excel in English?

GREAT NEWS! HELP IS HERE!

We offer an intensive and accelerated English Programme catering specifically to Primary 5 to 6 as well as secondary school students.

Below are just some situations that students encountered and the whom we had worked with in the programme:

EDITING – in ‘O’ Level Paper 1, Section A [10 marks]

Your child might find the section on Editing difficult as he could not identify grammatical errors.

The usual approach is to have a student practice as many exercises as possible, simply because of the belief that “practice makes perfect”. Dutifully, your child will do the exercises but with not much improvement shown.

However, under our guidance, your child will be taught a foolproof method to secure a perfect or near-perfect score in this section.

When I first attended the lessons, I realised that the tutors have a lot of skills and techniques that make studying English easy. One of them was a strategy that helped us spot errors in Editing. They gave us a list of tips to be familiar with so that we will spot the mistakes quickly. This has helped me do consistently well in Editing.”

SUMMARY QUESTION – in ‘O’ Level Paper 2, Section C [15 marks]

Writing a summary within 80 words is a discipline which your child might find difficult to master. It carries the highest mark of 15 in the Comprehension paper. Your child is expected to analyse the question and understand the task required. The necessary skills needed include conciseness and accuracy.

When your child comes to us, he or she will be taught tried-and-tested techniques to identify relevant points and then write them in a cohesive and concise whole.

Summary Writing is an important part of the English Comprehension because of the heavy weightage it carries and it can be a remarkably tough section to ‘conquer’. However. Mrs Ng was not to be fazed by this. She taught us skills to pick out all the relevant points, and to rephrase them accurately. Although it sounds simple, this method has helped me tremendously. As a result, I was able to secure consistently high scores in Summary Writing!

CONTINUOUS WRITING – in ‘O’ Level Paper 1, Section C [30 marks]

It can be a mammoth task for your child to master the different types of continuous writing such as argumentative, discursive, personal recount and personal reflective. Moreover, the required length of the essay is between 350 and 500 words.

With us, your child will learn techniques that will boost his confidence in writing different types of essays. He will be taught features that not only make an essay excellent but also the features that will secure him a great grade! He will also be taught how to create his very own masterpieces in preparation for the GCE O-level examination.

Before attending Mrs Ng’s class, I struggled with Essay Writing as I lacked good vocabulary that  adds ‘colour’ to my composition. However, Mrs Ng taught me the different ways to ‘spice up’ my essays using several linguistic features. They were very effective in improving my grade. The descriptive expressions used in the model essays, gave me a clear picture of the types required by the examiners to secure a distinction in my writing.”
